It reacts with alcohols and amines to form polyurethanes, and is a key raw material for high-end coatings and adhesives.

Coatings: used in automotive refinish paints, original equipment manufacturer (OEM) paints, and wood coatings, offering non-yellowing, color-retentive, and weather-resistant properties.
Adhesives: a curing agent in polyurethane adhesives for demanding bonding applications.
Elastomers: a building block for polyurethane elastomers with high thermal stability, oil resistance, and abrasion resistance.

China's HDI production is mainly based on hexamethylenediamine feedstock and phosgene processing, with supply and pricing closely tied to upstream hexamethylenediamine costs.
