Diethanolamine (DEA, 2,2'-iminodiethanol, CAS 111-42-2) is a colourless, viscous liquid or crystalline solid with a mild amine odour, miscible with water and ethanol. It is a key organic intermediate bearing both hydroxyl and amine functional groups, used widely in agrochemicals, detergents, and gas treatment.

Agrochemicals: a primary raw material for the IDA route to the herbicide glyphosate, a major end-use in China.
Industrial: used as a gas-purification agent, corrosion inhibitor, and component in metalworking fluids, engine coolants, and lubricants.
Personal care & detergents: serves as a surfactant and pH adjuster in cleaning and cosmetic formulations.
Textiles & construction: applied in textile finishing and as a chemical intermediate in building-material additives.
