Overview

Chlorodifluoromethane (HCFC-22, R22, CAS 75-45-6) is a colorless, slightly sweet-smelling gas that is non-flammable, non-corrosive, and of very low toxicity. It is a hydrochlorofluorocarbon used primarily as a refrigerant and as a key feedstock for fluoropolymers.

Refrigeration & air conditioning: widely used in residential, commercial, and industrial cooling systems, including chillers, cold storage, and heat pumps.
Chemical feedstock: a major raw material for producing tetrafluoroethylene (TFE), which is used to make PTFE and other fluoropolymers.
Foam blowing: serves as a physical blowing agent for polymer (plastic) foams.
Other uses: acts as a propellant in aerosols and an intermediate in the production of fire-extinguishing agents.

China is the largest producer and consumer of HCFC-22. Under the Montreal Protocol, its production is being phased down, with quotas reduced to about 73% of 2013 levels by 2022. Production is increasingly concentrated among top domestic producers, and roughly half of output is directed to TFE production rather than refrigerant use.
