Overview

Casein (dry casein, CAS 9000-71-9) is a white to pale-yellow, odourless powder or granule derived from fresh milk via centrifugation, defatting, precipitation, and drying. It is a phosphoprotein that precipitates under acidic conditions (pH < 4.6) and serves as a key food additive and industrial raw material.

Food: acts as an emulsifier, thickener, and protein fortifier in dairy products, meat products, and nutritional foods.
Industrial: used in leather finishing, paper coating, textile sizing, and as a binder in paints and adhesives.
Pharmaceutical & cosmetics: a stabiliser and binding agent in tablets, creams, and other formulations.
Specialty materials: historically used in pen barrels and other moulded articles.

China's production relies mainly on quzla (Tibetan-style dried curd) as feedstock due to limited fresh milk supply, with output concentrated in Gansu and Qinghai. Domestic output is largely mid-to-low-end grades, while high-purity casein is imported, with annual imports of around 5,000–6,000 tonnes. International demand is strong, led by Japan and the US.
