Abrasives & machining: self-sharpening grains fracture naturally to expose fresh cutting edges, enabling stable, continuous processing of tungsten carbide tools and sapphire substrates without surface contamination.
Defense & armor: formed into lightweight ceramic plates for ballistic protection, valued for high hardness combined with low density.
Nuclear energy: an ideal neutron absorber that does not form radioactive isotopes, used in reactor control rods and spent-fuel storage/transport casks, often as B₄C/Al composites.
