Ammonium paratungstate (APT, CAS 11120-25-5) is a white crystalline intermediate with the formula (NH₄)₁₀W₁₂O₄₁·xH₂O, soluble in water and insoluble in alcohol. It is the pivotal "gold standard" compound in the tungsten value chain, bridging ore concentrate and downstream tungsten products.

Metallurgy: the primary feedstock for producing tungsten powder and tungsten carbide via high-temperature reduction, which are then used in cemented carbide tools, drills, and wear parts.
Electronics & lighting: a precursor for tungsten wire, electronic materials, and tungsten-based components.
Chemical intermediates: converted into tungsten oxides and other tungsten chemicals for catalysts and specialty applications.

China is the world's largest APT producer, with output concentrated in Jiangxi, Hunan, Henan, and Fujian provinces, which together account for the bulk of national capacity. Production routes start from tungsten concentrate (scheelite or wolframite), with APT crystallization serving as a key purification step to remove impurities like molybdenum and tin.
