Why is the Japan naphtha crisis threatening banana ripening and everyday consumer goods?

Why is the Japan naphtha crisis threatening banana ripening and everyday consumer goods?
Japan imports over 80% of its naphtha from the Middle East, and the Strait of Hormuz disruption has pushed CIF Japan spot naphtha up nearly 60% since late February. With commercial inventories down to roughly 20 days, Mitsubishi Chemical, Idemitsu and Sumitomo Chemical have cut cracker loads. The knock-on effect is severe: ethylene output has fallen around 40%, and since ethylene is the feedstock for ripening gas, packaging inks and plastics, downstream goods from bananas to snack packaging face shortages. This is a textbook single-point-of-failure supply chain.

The real lesson for buyers is inventory policy. Japan ran lean just-in-time naphtha stocks for years to cut costs, and that works until a chokepoint closes. Anyone sourcing light alkylate or cracking feedstock should now stress-test lead times and hold a buffer, even at a carrying cost. Cheap logistics is no substitute for supply security.
