Why is red phosphorus supply tightening and what drives its price?
Red phosphorus sits downstream of yellow phosphorus, which is the real bottleneck. Yunnan, China's largest yellow phosphorus province, cut September-December output to just 10% of August levels, effectively removing 45% of national capacity. Since yellow phosphorus is the sole feedstock for thermal phosphoric acid and red phosphorus, this cascades directly into red phosphorus availability. Domestic producers like Chuanlin Chemical and Yunnan Jiangphosphorus Group run 5,000 and 2,500 tonnes of red phosphorus capacity respectively, but feedstock constraints now cap utilization. Meanwhile, downstream demand from flame retardants, semiconductors, and matches remains steady. With US designating elemental phosphorus as a defense-critical material and Egypt halting new phosphate rock export contracts, the entire phosphorus chain faces structural supply tightening. Expect red phosphorus prices to track yellow phosphorus upward, with coated grades commanding premiums due to tighter specialty supply.
