China's benzene capacity reached 26.2 million tons/year by end-2021, with output of 18.1 million tons. Sinopec and PetroChina rank among the global top three producers, yet no Chinese firm matches the integrated scale of BASF or Shell in aromatics. The gap lies downstream: Chinese benzene feeds mostly domestic PX-PTA-polyester chains, while Western majors leverage benzene into high-margin derivatives like styrene, phenol, MDI and caprolactam with global trading desks. China's capacity is fragmented across many plants, diluting pricing power. As Shell reviews European assets—including 1.25 million tons of benzene at Wesseling—Chinese producers could gain export opportunities, but only if they build integrated, globally competitive downstream portfolios rather than just expanding raw benzene output.
