When will the Organic Chemicals cycle turn, and what signals should traders watch?
The ethylene-to-naphtha spread is the cleanest cycle gauge, reflecting marginal cracking economics. It has stayed below historical norms for over a decade, signaling persistent oversupply and weak demand. Spreads bottom when capacity exits and inventories clear, then recover as demand improves. Aromatics offer a separate lever: gasoline blending demand can divert toluene and xylene away from PX production, lifting PX, benzene and downstream costs. Plant maintenance seasons add further upside. Watch the spread, blending economics and turnaround schedules together rather than any single indicator.
