What role does DOA play in cold-resistant plasticizers and how does it compare with DOS?
DOA (bis(2-ethylhexyl) adipate) is the most widely used cold-resistant plasticizer for PVC, suited for environments from 0°C down to -25°C. Typical applications include agricultural film, ordinary water pipes, and frozen food packaging. Its price is significantly lower than DOS, making it the cost-effective choice for moderate cold resistance. However, DOA shares a key limitation with DOS: limited compatibility with PVC. Adding more than 5-20% of total oil content risks surface migration, or 'sweating', which harms product appearance and quality. For formulators, DOA is ideal for southern China winters or general outdoor use, while DOS is reserved for extreme cold below -26°C, such as high-altitude or northern regions.

    The 5-20% addition limit is a practical constraint often overlooked. In real compounding, blending DOA with a primary plasticizer like DOP or DOTP can improve compatibility while retaining low-temperature flexibility. Also note that DOA's lower viscosity can aid processing, but its volatility is higher than polymeric plasticizers, so check end-use temperature requirements carefully.
