What price trends can we expect for o-toluic acid given feedstock toluene volatility?
o-Toluic acid pricing is closely tied to toluene, as evidenced by the 2024 benzoic acid market where toluene fluctuations drove sharp price swings. Toluene fell from around 6,900 yuan/t in mid-September to 5,900-6,100 yuan/t by late September, pushing benzoic acid below 6,000 yuan/t for the first time that year. By December, toluene stabilized near 5,900 yuan/t, and benzoic acid held at 5,900-6,000 yuan/t. For o-toluic acid, similar cost pass-through dynamics apply, though its smaller market size and specialty applications may dampen volatility. Producers are likely to adjust quotes in line with toluene movements, but downstream buyers in pharmaceutical and agrochemical segments tend to procure on a just-in-time basis, limiting speculative inventory buildup. Expect o-toluic acid to track toluene directionally with a lag, and monitor crude oil trends as a leading indicator.

Don't overlook the impact of new coal-to-aromatics projects in Xinjiang and Shaanxi. As these ramp up, they could alter the domestic toluene supply mix, potentially decoupling toluene prices from crude oil and creating new cost dynamics for o-toluic acid producers.
