What is driving the recent price surge in China's potassium nitrate market?
China's potassium nitrate prices have climbed sharply since 2021, from roughly 4,000 yuan/ton at the start of that year to a peak of 7,600 yuan/ton in 2022. The initial driver was tight domestic supply and a supply-demand mismatch, while the subsequent rally was fueled by rising feedstock costs, particularly potassium chloride. Domestic effective capacity stands at about 2.18 million tons/year, but the industry is highly fragmented, with the top three producers—Bingsheng Chemical, Changsheng Nitrate Salt, and Sichuan Migo—holding only around 18% of capacity. On the demand side, agriculture accounts for half of consumption, followed by industrial uses at 45% and glass at 5%. Looking ahead, the emerging molten salt energy storage sector could add significant demand, with 3.01 GW of planned concentrated solar power projects potentially requiring an additional 410,000 tons of potassium nitrate, which may tip the market into deficit.
