What is driving China's cresol market dynamics and price trends?
China's cresol market is undergoing structural shifts. Domestic production of meta-cresol remains concentrated among a few players, with Hihua Technology holding around 8,000 tonnes of capacity and producing roughly 4,000 tonnes annually. Global capacity exceeds 60,000 tonnes, dominated by Lanxess and Sasol. China's anti-dumping duties on US, EU, and Japanese imports, effective since 2021, have supported import substitution and pushed price benchmarks upward, with import prices rising from around RMB 20,000/tonne in 2018 to peaks of RMB 50,000-60,000/tonne in 2022 before easing. Downstream demand is robust, led by vitamin E intermediates (45%), pesticides (30%), and growing menthol applications. Domestic output has hovered near 7,500 tonnes, leaving a supply gap that imports historically filled, though new capacity additions are gradually shifting pricing power back to domestic producers.

The menthol chain is the real growth story here. Each tonne of L-menthol consumes roughly 1.5 tonnes of thymol, which in turn needs about 1 tonne of meta-cresol. With Wanhua and NHU both advancing menthol projects, expect meta-cresol demand to tighten further, potentially supporting higher domestic prices despite new capacity.
