What drives price direction for Alcohols & Ethers in China's coatings chain?
Pricing here is feedstock-led and increasingly broad rather than product-specific. Crude oil strength lifts propylene, propane and benzene, which feed resins, solvents, monomers and plasticisers. Within solvents, glycol ethers have moved more sharply than resins: ethylene glycol butyl ether and isopropanol have posted larger gains than epoxy or unsaturated resin. Because alcohols and ethers sit mid-chain, they transmit cost both upward into coatings formulators and downward from propylene oxide and ethylene oxide. With crude-driven increases hitting nearly every grade at once, the category behaves less like isolated products and more like one correlated cost block.

The correlation matters for procurement. When the whole category moves together, hedging single grades offers little protection. Formulators are better served by watching propylene oxide and crude as leading indicators, then timing contract renewals around those signals rather than reacting to individual solvent quotes after they have already repriced.
