What drives pentaerythritol price direction in the near term?
Pentaerythritol is made from formaldehyde and acetaldehyde under alkaline catalysis, so feedstock costs set the floor. The mainstream sodium route dominates over the older calcium process. On the demand side, alkyd resin coatings remain the largest outlet, with synthetic lubricants, rosin esters, plasticizers and pentaerythritol nitrate rounding out the mix. Recent market reports show firm upward momentum: 95% grade quoted around 11,200 and 98% grade near 13,500 in East China, with most plants on scheduled delivery and some pausing new orders to protect existing clients. Global market value sits near USD 795 million, growing at a low single-digit pace, so near-term price swings track supply disruptions more than demand shifts.

Feedstock alone will not explain the spikes. Formaldehyde and acetaldehyde are widely available, so the real leverage sits in concentrated high-purity capacity and producer discipline. When two or three plants control 98% supply, order pausing becomes a pricing tool. Buyers should track plant maintenance calendars and delivery lead times as leading indicators, not just raw material quotes.
