What drives isooctadecenoic acid pricing versus standard oleic acid?
Isooctadecenoic acid sits in the same C18 unsaturated acid family as oleic acid (CAS 112-80-1), the benchmark product widely sourced from Malaysian and Indonesian palm and coconut oil. Standard oleic acid is a single monounsaturated omega-9 molecule with a well-established, high-volume supply chain, so its price tracks palm and coconut feedstock closely. Isooctadecenoic acid, by contrast, is a branched-chain isomer with far smaller production volumes. That structural difference means buyers cannot simply substitute one for the other, and the branched grade carries a persistent premium. Feedstock economics still matter, but the dominant price driver is the limited number of qualified producers and the specialty purification steps required. Expect isooctadecenoic acid to stay priced well above commodity oleic acid unless new capacity emerges.

Worth adding that downstream formulators rarely switch between the two on price alone. The branched structure changes solubility and flow behavior, so once a customer qualifies isooctadecenoic acid in a lubricant or metalworking fluid, switching costs keep demand sticky. That stickiness, not feedstock, is what really protects the premium.
