What drives cerium oxide prices when praseodymium and neodymium prices are moving?
Cerium oxide trades in a different world from the magnet rare earths. While praseodymium-neodymium oxide, dysprosium, and terbium command prices in the hundreds of thousands of yuan per ton, cerium oxide sits near the bottom of the rare earth oxide complex, recently quoted around 7,100 yuan per ton and flat week on week. The reason is structural: cerium is the most abundant rare earth and is co-produced in large volumes during separation of higher-value elements. Its price therefore tracks its own demand cycle in polishing, catalysis, and glass rather than magnet sentiment. Buyers should watch automotive catalyst and glass demand signals, not the NdFeB narrative.
