What are the real supply-demand dynamics behind dysprosium oxide price surges after China's export controls?
China's April 2025 export controls on seven medium-heavy rare earths, including dysprosium, triggered immediate price shocks. European dysprosium oxide spot prices jumped from roughly $200/kg to $700-1,000/kg, a 3-5x increase. Domestic praseodymium-neodymium oxide rose over 100% to about 816,000 yuan/tonne. Supply-side constraints are structural: China's dysprosium oxide output fell from 346 tonnes in September 2025 to 186 tonnes by December, nearly halving under new quota management rules that extend controls down to county level. Demand is accelerating from AI-driven MLCC capacitors, humanoid robot servo motors requiring 200-300g per unit, and EV traction motors needing high-temperature stability. Overseas projects from Lynas, Iluka, and MP Materials are years away from meaningful volumes, with most capacity slated for 2027-2030. The market faces a genuine tightness window through 2026.

The price spike reflects both physical scarcity and strategic hoarding. End-users should secure 3-6 month forward contracts now. Watch for China's next quota announcement—if medium-heavy rare earth quotas stay flat, expect continued upward pressure on dysprosium oxide through year-end.
