DBP is a general-purpose plasticizer for PVC and vinyl copolymers, valued for low volatility, low migration and good light, heat and ageing resistance, plus better water extraction resistance than DOP. Its weaknesses are equally clear: plasticizing efficiency runs about 10% below DOP, and cold flexibility is poorer, so it is unsuitable for low-temperature applications. It is compatible with PVC, polystyrene and vinyl chloride-acetate copolymers, partially compatible with several cellulose and vinyl resins, and incompatible with cellulose acetate, ethyl cellulose and PMMA. Toxicity is low, with oral LD50 above 10 g/kg in rats. It also serves as a plasticizer for cellulose resins and nitrile rubber.
