What are the main downstream applications driving MIBK demand in China?
Rubber antioxidant 4020 is the dominant outlet for MIBK in China, accounting for roughly 60% of consumption. MIBK reacts with 4-aminodiphenylamine to produce this key tire additive, linking demand directly to automotive and tire industry growth. The rapid expansion of China's new energy vehicle sector has therefore become a significant demand driver. Coatings account for about 10% of consumption, followed by adhesives at 3% and inks at 1%. MIBK's role as a high-end solvent in wood, architectural and specialty automotive coatings remains hard to substitute in the near term, though tightening environmental regulations could gradually shift share toward waterborne systems.

Beyond traditional uses, keep an eye on emerging high-value applications like nuclear fuel reprocessing and plant-based pharmaceutical extraction. These niche segments may not move volumes today but could offer premium pricing opportunities for domestic producers looking to diversify beyond the rubber antioxidant chain.
