What are the key production routes for cumene and their commercial implications?
Cumene is industrially produced by the Friedel-Crafts alkylation of benzene with propylene. The classic process uses solid phosphoric acid on alumina with hydrogen chloride as a promoter, operating at atmospheric pressure and around 95°C. Both gas-phase and liquid-phase variants exist, with the liquid-phase process generally offering better selectivity and longer catalyst life. The chemistry is straightforward, but the real value lies in the cumene oxidation-rearrangement step that yields phenol and acetone. This is why cumene plants are almost always built as part of integrated phenol-acetone complexes. The feedstock economics are driven by benzene and propylene prices, and cumene margins typically track the spread between these inputs and the combined phenol-acetone output value. Producers must also manage the safety aspects of cumene hydroperoxide, a key intermediate.

    One technical point worth noting: the alkylation step produces mostly isopropylbenzene rather than n-propylbenzene because the primary carbocation rearranges to a secondary one under acid catalysis. This is why commercial cumene is essentially pure isopropylbenzene. For buyers, purity matters for downstream oxidation efficiency. Also, the solid phosphoric acid catalyst is being gradually replaced by zeolite-based systems in newer plants, offering higher yields and fewer byproducts, which slightly improves the cost position of modern integrated producers.
