What are the key production process features of basic chromium sulfate?
Basic chromium sulfate is produced mainly via organic reduction or sulfur dioxide reduction of sodium dichromate mother liquor. In the organic route, sodium dichromate is acidified with sodium bisulfate in lead-lined or glass-lined reactors, then reduced slowly with sucrose or glucose. The resulting syrup is diluted to 40-42°Bé, cooled below 10°C to crystallize out sodium sulfate (Glauber's salt), which is removed by centrifugation. The liquid product can be concentrated and dried into solid form. The process is energy-intensive and generates significant wastewater, especially during drying and granulation where tail gas contains acidic aerosols, chromium mist, and particulate matter requiring multi-stage wet scrubbing to meet emission limits.
