What are the key energy-saving options in potassium hydroxide evaporation?
Conventional KOH evaporation uses triple-effect falling film evaporators, concentrating 30% liquor to 48% under vacuum at 100-150°C. But an MVR retrofit on an 80,000 t/y plant shows major savings: combining MVR for the 11.85%-25% range with double-effect evaporation for 25%-42.16% cuts steam use to under 0.25 tons per ton of water removed. Annual operating cost savings reached about 5.1 million yuan, roughly 50% energy reduction. Titanium-palladium alloys resist corrosion in 50% KOH at 120°C, and counter-current flow improves temperature differential utilization by 25%. For producers, MVR is now the default upgrade path, especially with electricity cheaper than steam in many regions.
