Dichlorotrifluoroethane, known in the refrigerant trade as R123, is a hydrochlorofluorocarbon with a boiling point of 27.85°C and CAS 306-83-2. Its low ozone depletion potential of 0.02 and global warming potential of 93 make it a preferred substitute for the fully halogenated R-11 in centrifugal chillers and central air conditioning systems. Beyond refrigeration, R123 serves as a cleaning agent and blowing agent, replacing CFC-11 and CFC-113 in industrial applications. The product is typically supplied in 250kg steel drums with PVF internal coating, reflecting its niche but stable demand profile. Chinese production remains tied to the phase-down schedule for HCFCs under the Montreal Protocol, which is gradually constraining supply and supporting price firmness in domestic and export markets.
