Published on 2026-10-08

Around the National Day holiday (September 28–October 8, 2026), a surge in methanol spot prices significantly expanded profits across all production processes. Specifically, the weekly average profit for coal-based methanol in Northwest and Inner Mongolia regions (calculated based on full cost) reached CNY 891.87/ton, an increase of CNY 311.46/ton from the previous period, representing a quarter-over-quarter growth of 53.66%. When calculated based on cash flow cost, the weekly average profit for this process route was CNY 1,291.87/ton, up 31.77% quarter-over-quarter.

The weekly average profit for coke oven gas-based methanol in Hebei was CNY 1,721.45/ton, rising by CNY 191.45/ton from the previous week, a 12.51% increase. The weekly average profit for natural gas-based methanol in Southwest China was CNY 1,225/ton, an increase of CNY 925.00/ton from the previous week, marking a 32.53% rise. The weekly average profit for coal-based methanol in Shandong was CNY 1,086.87/ton, up by CNY 334.79/ton from the previous week, a 44.52% increase. Sample Description: On the data release day, Chempricehub Information monitors theoretical profits based on raw material prices and mainstream transaction prices of methanol in major production regions across China.

Definition: Production gross margin refers to the weekly theoretical gross margin for methanol producers. It is categorized by production process into weekly average gross margins for coal-based methanol, coke oven gas-based methanol, and natural gas-based methanol.

Statistical Methodology: The methanol gross margin reported by Chempricehub Information is a calculated figure derived from methanol market prices and total production costs. Data is released every Thursday at 15:00 on working days.

Note: Based on actual field surveys, the calculation formula for the production cost of coke oven gas-based methanol has been adjusted from "Hebei Methanol Price - (Thermal Coal Cost + Gas Price Cost + Other Costs)" to "Hebei Methanol Price - (Gas Price Cost + Other Costs)."

The 53% surge in coal-based methanol margins during the holiday is impressive, but I remain cautious about sustainability. With feedstock costs likely to stabilize post-holiday, these peak profits may not hold. Downstrea..
