Weekly Data Analysis of China's Methanol Production and Capacity Utilization Rate (September 25 – October 1, 2026)

Published on 2026-10-01

I. Qualitative Analysis of Production and Capacity Utilization Trends

During the week (September 25–October 1, 2026), China’s methanol production totaled 2,024,235 tons, an increase of 71,970 tons from the previous week. The plant capacity utilization rate was 89.60%, up 3.69% week-on-week.

Table 1: Weekly Comparison of China’s Methanol Production and Capacity Utilization (Unit: Tons, %)

Item This Week Last Week Change (%)
Production 2,024,235 1,952,265 +3.69%
Capacity Utilization Rate 89.60% 86.41% +3.69%

This week saw new maintenance shutdowns at facilities such as Shaanxi Weihua. In Xinjiang, two units implemented new production reductions. Meanwhile, several units undergoing maintenance or operating at reduced rates resumed normal operations, including Shaanxi Weihua, Inner Mongolia ENN, Inner Mongolia Rongxin, Hebi Coal Chemical, Chongqing Wansheng, Yunnan Yun Tianhua, Shanxi Yaxin, Gansu Huating, two units in Inner Mongolia, and one unit in Xinjiang. As the total volume recovered this period exceeded the volume lost to outages, both the capacity utilization rate and production output increased.

II. Forecast Analysis of Production and Capacity Utilization Trends

For next week, China’s weekly methanol production and capacity utilization are projected as follows: production is expected to reach approximately 2.1186 million tons, with a capacity utilization rate of around 93.78%, representing an increase compared to the current period. Since the planned capacity resuming operations next week exceeds the capacity affected by maintenance and production cuts, both the capacity utilization rate and production output are expected to rise.

III. Comparison of Capacity Utilization and Price Trends

This week, China’s methanol capacity utilization rate stood at 89.60%, rising 3.69% week-on-week and 5.36% year-on-year. The significant increase in domestic capacity utilization led to higher market supply volumes. However, futures prices continued to climb throughout the week. Downstream users maintained purchasing activities, resulting in healthy overall trading volumes and driving up the center of price negotiations.

Sample Description: Chempricehub Information’s weekly methanol production and capacity utilization statistics for China are primary statistical data. The sample covers 180 methanol producers nationwide, achieving a 100% coverage rate. The statistical period runs from Friday of the previous week to Thursday of the current week, with data released at 14:30 on Thursdays (working days).

Definitions:

  • Production: Generally refers to the quantity of goods produced by enterprises that meet relevant standards within a specific period (distinct from the concept of commodity volume; it refers to weight or volume under specific measurement standards), i.e., actual production.
  • Capacity Utilization Rate: Refers to the degree of utilization of an enterprise's capacity, also known as operating load. It is typically calculated as the ratio of product output or raw material processing volume to effective capacity.
  • Statistical Scope: The weekly production and capacity utilization statistics cover the period from Friday of the previous week to Thursday of the current week. Data is released at 14:30 on Thursdays (working days).

Capacity utilization jumped to 89.6% as resumed operations outweighed shutdowns, yet prices still climbed due to strong downstream demand. This tight supply-demand balance suggests methanol margins may remain robust desp..
