Under cost pressure, the price center of acrylic acid trended upward with fluctuations in August.

Published on 2026-09-04

Lead-in: In August 2026, China's acrylic acid market showed an overall pattern of volatile strength, with the price center of gravity rising steadily. Substantial increases in upstream propylene feedstock prices provided strong cost support, and combined with concentrated load reductions at major industry plants and tighter spot supply, formed the core upward drivers for the acrylic acid market. Meanwhile, downstream end-users under high-cost pressure showed a weak willingness to actively restock, creating constraining factors for the market trend.

  1. Sharp rise in feedstock propylene, significant cost support for acrylic acid

The core driving force behind the August acrylic acid market uptrend came from the strong rally in upstream propylene feedstock prices, which provided rigid cost support to the industry throughout the period. Data show that the domestic propylene market's monthly average price reached 8,519 yuan/ton this month, up 4.86% month-on-month, maintaining a high-level operating trend overall and directly pushing up processing costs for acrylic acid producers. The propylene market's strong performance this month followed a clear logic. On one hand, international oil prices remained broadly firm, consolidating the cost base of the petrochemical chain at the source and providing sustained downside support for propylene prices. On the other hand, domestic propylene plants entered the maintenance cycle in a concentrated manner, steadily tightening market circulating supply. Meanwhile, coastal typhoon weather disrupted regional logistics and transport, impeding cross-regional supply allocation, and some integrated downstream enterprises saw their feedstock gaps widen, further driving propylene prices higher.

Seeing acrylic acid drift higher on propylene feedstock cost and plant outages makes sense, but subdued downstream restocking signals margin recovery will stay limited. Watch September capacity utilization.
