1. Key Focus Points for Today

① Inner Mongolia Rongxin's methanol auction started at 3,260 CNY/tonne for a quantity of 5,000 tonnes, with all lots sold at final prices ranging from 3,260 to 3,265 CNY/tonne.

② Shaanxi Aowei Qianyuan’s 200,000-tonne/year coal-to-methanol unit is currently restarting; attention should be paid to product output in the latter half of the week. The scheduled maintenance for this project commenced on August 29 as planned.

[Today’s Commentary]
The domestic methanol spot price index stood at 3,588 (+52). Specifically, Taicang spot prices rose by 135 to 4,125, while the Inner Mongolia North Line price increased by 45 to 3,380. According to Chempricehub monitoring across 20 major cities, prices in 11 cities showed varying degrees of increase, ranging from 10 to 160 CNY/tonne. The domestic methanol market maintained overall relative strength today. Port area gains significantly outpaced inland regions due to persistently low inventory levels combined with restocking activities. Consequently, the intraday basis strengthened markedly, with sellers maintaining firm pricing and reluctance to sell. Inland markets exhibited regional variations: the Southwest region saw expected substantial catch-up increases. In Northwest production areas, spot/near-term delivery prices remained notably higher than forward prices. Ahead of the holiday, upstream suppliers continued pre-sales, and downstream buyers engaged in essential stockpiling. Overall, major markets are expected to maintain a bullish trend in the short term. Additionally, with the Mid-Autumn Festival approaching, downstream delivery cycles are tight; monitor the pace of freight rate increases.

In the afternoon session, methanol futures on the Zhengzhou Commodity Exchange rose. The MA2610 contract opened at 3,481 CNY/tonne, reached a high of 3,514 CNY/tonne, hit a low of 3,393 CNY/tonne, and closed at 3,505 CNY/tonne, up 40 CNY/tonne from the previous day’s settlement. As of the close, open interest for the MA2609 contract was 292,600 lots, an increase of 3,400 lots from the previous trading day.

5. Price Forecast

  1. The domestic methanol market has maintained overall relative strength. Port area gains significantly outpaced inland regions due to persistently low inventory levels combined with restocking activities. Consequently, the intraday basis strengthened markedly, with sellers maintaining firm pricing and reluctance to sell. Inland markets exhibited regional variations: the Southwest region saw expected substantial catch-up increases. In Northwest production areas, spot/near-term delivery prices remained notably higher than forward prices. Ahead of the holiday, upstream suppliers continued pre-sales, and downstream buyers engaged in essential stockpiling. Overall, major markets are expected to maintain a bullish trend in the short term. Additionally, with the Mid-Autumn Festival approaching, downstream delivery cycles are tight; monitor the pace of freight rate increases.

  2. In the medium to long term, the tightness in domestic methanol spot supply has eased somewhat due to an increase in companies exporting methanol and downstream units shutting down in resistance to high prices. As earlier high prices gradually retreat, it remains to be seen whether the recovery of methanol plant units and the extent of reduced downstream demand can continue to provide support.

7. Related Products Status

Glacial Acetic Acid: Market prices continued to rise today. Factory inventories remain low, with many plants balancing production and sales, sustaining a bullish sentiment. While some traders exhibit fear of high prices, overall offers followed the upward trend. Downstream units have announced maintenance schedules, but actual implementation requires monitoring. Chempricehub forecasts that glacial acetic acid market prices will continue to rise in the short term.

Formaldehyde: The formaldehyde market showed stability with slight increases today. Feedstock methanol performed strongly, providing good cost support. After minor price hikes, product shipments were smooth. With the upcoming holiday, downstream wood panel manufacturers showed strong purchasing intent, resulting in active trading within the market. Chempricehub forecasts that the formaldehyde market will maintain a slightly bullish consolidation in the short term.

Dimethyl Ether (DME): The DME market operated steadily today. Supply increased within the market, primarily aimed at replenishing inventories. Factories focused on selling existing stocks. Industrial downstream users maintained minimal essential purchases, trader participation was average, and market transactions proceeded in an orderly manner. Chempricehub forecasts that DME market prices will remain stable in the short term.
