Soda ash prices are consolidating at the bottom, with certain plants undergoing maintenance or reducing output.

Published on 2026-08-10

Recently, the soda ash market has been moving with a weak, range-bound trend, with prices hovering near the bottom and adjusting narrowly. Downstream demand remains lackluster, with purchases largely on an as-needed basis. As spot prices have declined, producer losses have widened, and some companies have reduced output or halted production for maintenance. The market lacks clear drivers, and prices continue to linger at the bottom. With the industry currently loss-making and pressure mounting on producers, the downside for spot prices is expected to be limited.

Recent points of focus in the soda ash market:

  1. Soda ash transaction volumes and pending order backlogs.
  2. The impact of high ocean freight rates on soda ash imports and exports.
  3. Downstream inventory levels and plant operating conditions.
  4. Soda ash plant maintenance schedules and production cuts.
  5. Soda ash producer inventories and price adjustments.
  6. Futures price fluctuations and macroeconomic drivers.

At present, some producers have halted or reduced production, leading to a declining supply trend. Current daily soda ash output stands at 102,000 tons. Recently, few new maintenance shutdowns have been added, and most plants are operating normally. Previously halted or reduced-capacity units have been slow to recover, while a few producers have experienced sudden shutdowns due to equipment issues.

  1. Plant operations fluctuate, with operating rates adjusting within a narrow range.

I see margins squeezed, but maintenance cuts and lower capacity utilization should tighten supply. Downstream demand is weak, yet downside looks limited. Expect near-bottom consolidation.
