Recovery in Supply Expectations Weakens Soda Ash Trend

Published on 2026-09-11

As maintenance shutdowns for soda ash near completion, supply is expected to increase. Recently, falling soda ash futures prices and new price adjustments have led to weaker overall trading activity. Downstream demand remains moderate, with only sporadic restocking by buyers. Currently, the soda ash market lacks strong drivers, and prices are expected to fluctuate within a narrow range. Order backlogs provide some support, resulting in only minor adjustments to spot prices.

Key points of focus in the recent soda ash market:

  1. Trading volume and pending orders.
  2. The impact of high ocean freight rates on soda ash imports and exports.
  3. Downstream inventory levels and plant operating status.
  4. Progress in resuming operations after maintenance at soda ash plants.
  5. Inventory levels at soda ash producers and price adjustments.
  6. Futures price volatility and macroeconomic drivers.

Recently, ongoing maintenance at certain plants and unexpected equipment shutdowns at individual facilities have reduced supply. Based on current maintenance schedules, some plants are expected to restart soon, leading to an anticipated increase in supply going forward. Current daily soda ash production stands at approximately 93,000+ tonnes.

  1. Plant fluctuations lead to narrow adjustments in operating rates

With maintenance ending, rising soda ash supply meets only moderate downstream demand. High freight costs and weak trading keep prices in a narrow range. I’m watching capacity utilization closely; without strong restock..
