Maintenance completed, soda ash supply increases.

Published on 2026-08-17

Currently, soda ash is trending weak and volatile, with prices fluctuating near the bottom in narrow adjustments. Downstream demand remains lukewarm, with procurement mostly on an as-needed basis. As plants that previously underwent maintenance resume operations, supply is showing an increasing trend. With few maintenance shutdowns scheduled in the coming period, output is expected to remain at high levels. The market lacks clear drivers, and prices continue to hover near the bottom. With the industry currently loss-making and increasing pressure on producers, spot prices are expected to have limited downside.

Recent focus points in the soda ash market:

  1. Soda ash trading conditions and pending orders.

  2. Impact of high ocean freight on soda ash imports and exports.

  3. Downstream inventory levels and plant operating conditions.

  4. Soda ash plant maintenance schedules and production cuts.

  5. Soda ash producer inventories and price adjustments.

  6. Futures price fluctuations and macroeconomic drivers.

As maintenance plants resume production and few new maintenance shutdowns are scheduled, soda ash output and operating rates are trending upward, indicating ample supply. Currently, daily soda ash output stands at 108,000 tons. In the near term, few plants are scheduled for maintenance, and most are operating normally.

  1. Plant fluctuations, operating rates adjust within a narrow range

Capacity utilization is rising as maintenance ends, boosting supply while downstream demand stays weak. Margins are squeezed, but with producers loss-making, I expect limited downside despite no clear driver.
