Is n-pentane a liquid or gas at room temperature and what are its main industrial uses?
At normal room temperature of 25°C, n-pentane is a colorless liquid with a slight mint-like odor. It is the straight-chain isomer of pentane (C5H12), with a boiling point around 36°C, making it highly volatile and flammable. Chemically stable below 600°C, it undergoes thermal cracking at higher temperatures or with catalysts to produce propylene, butenes, butane, and isopropane mixtures. Industrial applications are diverse: it serves as a low-boiling solvent, a blowing agent for EPS foam used in building insulation, a molecular sieve desorbent in dewaxing processes, a solvent for high-density polyethylene polymerization catalysts, and a component in hydrocarbon refrigerant blends. It is also used to manufacture artificial ice, synthesize pentanol and isopentane, and as a chromatographic standard. In China, a significant portion of n-pentane goes into gasoline blending, while the chemical segment focuses on foaming agents. For export, n-pentane is classified as UN 1265, Class 3 flammable liquid, Packing Group II, requiring commercial inspection for shipment from China.

    The dual-use nature of n-pentane—both fuel blending and chemical feedstock—creates price linkages to both gasoline and petrochemical markets. When refining margins are strong, less material flows to chemical buyers, tightening supply. Track refinery operating rates and C5 stream availability for early signals on price direction.
