Is furazolidone still legally usable in human medicine after the 2019 China ban?
China's 2019 announcement halted production, sale, and use of four furazolidone-containing compound preparations, including compound Hemsleya capsules and furazolidone-kushen-berberine tablets, citing serious adverse reactions where risk outweighed benefit. Critically, the ban targeted compound formulations, not the single-ingredient furazolidone tablet, which remains approved but with a narrowed indication limited to difficult-to-eradicate Helicobacter pylori infection. For the chemical trade this creates a two-tier demand picture: a small, tightly regulated pharmaceutical channel for the API, and a much larger, largely illegal veterinary and aquaculture channel. The distinction matters for anyone tracking legitimate versus grey-market offtake, since the human-use volume alone cannot support current production economics.

Watch the regulatory direction rather than the current text. The indication was already narrowed once, and compound forms were pulled outright. Any further tightening would strand API capacity that currently leans on non-pharma demand, so contract terms should anticipate a shrinking legal outlet.
