Is China's isophthalic acid industry a duopoly, and what does that mean for buyers?
China's isophthalic acid industry is a tight oligopoly. As of 2024, Hengyi Petrochemical controls 54.55% of national capacity with 300,000 tons, while Ningbo Formosa holds 36.36% with 200,000 tons. Together they supply over 90% of domestic output. The sector is capital- and technology-intensive, with high entry barriers, so no new players have emerged since the 2020-2021 expansion wave. Capacity has been frozen at 550,000 tons since 2022. Downstream demand is concentrated in polyester bottle chips (over 40% of consumption), followed by alkyd resins and unsaturated polyester resins. This structure gives producers strong pricing power, especially when polyester demand runs hot, as seen in 2024 when bottle chip output jumped 18.17%.

Buyers face limited negotiating leverage in this market. However, the 34% import share still provides an alternative supply source. Global producers like Lotte and BASF can serve as a price ceiling. For long-term planning, consider dual-sourcing strategies and monitor any capacity announcements from the two incumbents.
