How large is China's sec-butyl acetate capacity and who actually produces it?
China's effective sec-butyl acetate capacity sits around 430,000 tons per year, with several long-idled units excluded. Only five plants remain active, and utilization has run at roughly 30-50% under power-rationing constraints, with some units down for extended upstream maintenance. No new capacity has been announced in recent years. Demand is structurally pressured: sec-butyl acetate is mainly an oil-based paint solvent, and the national push toward water-based coatings keeps eroding that outlet, while toluene and xylene continue to cap any price rebound.

The export angle deserves attention. When one major Huizhou unit restarted, its output went entirely to overseas fuel blending, not domestic coatings. That means domestic solvent supply can tighten or loosen based on export economics rather than local paint demand, so buyers should track export flows as much as coating-sector activity.
