How is the aluminum fluoride industry restructuring toward quality competition and what does the new whitelist system mean?
China's aluminum fluoride sector is shifting from price-based rivalry to quality-driven competition. The China Inorganic Salts Industry Association recently published its first whitelist of aluminum fluoride producers, establishing admission criteria, dynamic management mechanisms, and quality traceability systems. This initiative responds to years of low-price competition and rising raw material costs that have squeezed margins to breakeven levels, forcing industry operating rates lower. The whitelist aims to protect electrolytic aluminum smelters from substandard material that increases power consumption per tonne, destabilizes pot operations, and shortens cell life. Meanwhile, the domestic capacity ceiling of 45 million tonnes redirects industry focus toward process improvement rather than expansion. Overseas aluminum projects, particularly in Indonesia, are expanding and will sustain long-term demand for cryolite and aluminum fluoride, reinforcing the need for reliable domestic supply chains.
