How is green methanol production reshaping the fusel oil supply landscape?
China's accelerating green methanol projects are emerging as a notable new source of fusel oil supply. The Sany Jilin Changling project, designed to produce 327,000 tonnes of methanol annually, will yield 2,500 tonnes of fusel oil as a byproduct. Similarly, Guangdong Energy Group's biomass-to-methanol demonstration plant in Zhanjiang plans annual output of 100,000 tonnes of methanol with 888 tonnes of fusel oil. These projects, driven by shipping industry decarbonization demands from giants like Maersk and COSCO, use biomass gasification and green hydrogen. While current volumes are modest, the pipeline of announced projects—including those by Jidian, Zheneng, and BOYUAN—suggests cumulative fusel oil supply from this sector could grow substantially by 2030, adding a new, relatively pure and consistent feedstock stream to a market traditionally dominated by alcohol distilleries.
