How is China's cyclohexanone production technology evolving and what impact will it have on supply?
Sinopec Hunan Petrochemical has started full-load operation of the world's first industrial unit using cyclohexene esterification-hydrogenation to produce cyclohexanone, a technology developed over 13 years with Sinopec Research Institute. The unit, part of a 600,000-tonne/year caprolactam complex, now produces over 600 tonnes of high-quality cyclohexanone daily, with peak output exceeding 640 tonnes at 105% load. This route offers higher carbon yield, lower emissions and better safety than conventional cyclohexane oxidation. Two production lines, each with 200,000 tonnes/year capacity, are now running. This breakthrough challenges traditional technology and signals a shift toward greener, more efficient production, potentially reshaping China's cyclohexanone cost curve and regional supply patterns.
