How is China's acrylic acid supply landscape consolidating and what does it mean for buyers?
China's acrylic acid production is concentrating among a few integrated players, notably Satellite Chemical, Shanghai Huayi, Wanhua Chemical, and BASF. Satellite Chemical has expanded its acrylic acid and ester capacity to over 2 million tons per year, ranking first domestically and second globally. The company is adding 20,000 tons of refined acrylic acid capacity in Pinghu and a 20,000-ton specialty acrylate project slated for late 2026 to early 2027, targeting high-purity applications like SAP and specialty esters. Meanwhile, the broader acrylic acid market faces structural oversupply risks, with industry operating rates hovering around 70-75%, and new PDH-based acrylic capacity continuing to come online, pressuring margins for non-integrated producers.

For downstream buyers, this consolidation means fewer but more reliable suppliers. However, the shift toward high-purity and specialty grades suggests commodity-grade acrylic acid may face persistent oversupply, keeping spot prices volatile. Buyers should consider long-term contracts with integrated producers to hedge against feedstock-driven price swings, especially given propane price sensitivity.
