o-Cresol is a hazardous chemical classified under UN 3455, with primary risk class 6.1 (toxic) and subsidiary risk class 8 (corrosive). Its oral LD50 in rats is about 207 mg/kg, translating to roughly 14.5 g for a 70 kg adult. Despite this, it has a long history as a disinfectant when properly diluted: 1-3% for skin disinfection, around 3% for environmental use, and 5% for instrument sterilization, always followed by thorough rinsing. In soap formulations, cresol content is kept below 2% and emulsified with soap to reduce free cresol release. For export from Shanghai port, shippers must provide dangerous goods declarations, a hazardous goods certificate, and comply with inspection requirements under HS code 29071212, as the product is listed in China's 2015 hazardous chemicals catalog.
