Lanthanum sits at the center of China's rare earth export strategy. In March 2025, lanthanum oxide was the largest light rare earth export by volume, reaching 3,823 tonnes. China holds roughly 49% of global reserves and 69% of production, with over 90% of global smelting and separation capacity. While praseodymium-neodymium dominates value, lanthanum-cerium fractions from Bayan Obo mines historically accumulated as surplus inventory. Recent quarters show these lower-value products finally selling faster than production, indicating broad-based demand recovery. China's quota system now covers mining and smelting separately, with 2024 first-batch quotas set at 135,000 tonnes for mining and 127,000 tonnes for separation.
