How does China's iodine supply chain differ from global producers, and what does that mean for buyers?
China's iodine production is fundamentally different from Chile's and Japan's. Domestic output relies on extracting iodine from phosphate rock processing and seaweed, yielding less than 1,000 tonnes annually. In contrast, Chile recovers iodine as a byproduct of nitrate mining, while Japan extracts it from underground brine associated with natural gas fields. These methods give Chile and Japan cost advantages and scale that China cannot match. As a result, Chinese buyers depend on imports for nearly 90% of supply. Quality also differs: domestic iodine is typically referenced by CAS 7553-56-2, while imported material is often tracked under CAS 12190-71-5 in trade flows. Imported iodine generally commands a premium due to higher purity and consistency, especially for pharmaceutical and electronic applications. For procurement managers, this means supply security and price stability are inherently tied to overseas producers, making long-term contracts and diversified sourcing essential.

    Don't overlook iodine recovery. Globally, about 17% of supply now comes from recycling industrial waste streams. In China, companies like Boyuan are advancing recovery tech, and shale gas brine projects are planned from 2026. These could gradually reduce import dependence and offer buyers a domestic alternative to volatile Chilean pricing.
