How does China's biomimetic catalysis technology reshape the cyclohexane oxidation economics?
China has achieved a global first in commercializing metal porphyrin biomimetic catalysis for cyclohexane air oxidation, a process long deemed unviable by Western researchers due to catalyst cost and complexity. Industrial trials on 45,000-ton and 70,000-ton cyclohexanone units delivered a 7.1% yield, versus roughly 4% conversion and 83% selectivity for conventional processes. This technology directly improves the economics of the cyclohexane-to-cyclohexanone route, a major downstream consumer of cyclohexane. If scaled further, it could lower production costs for nylon intermediates and shift demand patterns for merchant cyclohexane, as producers may favor integrated oxidation units over simple resale.

    The yield improvement is meaningful but not transformative at current scale. The real test is whether the technology can be retrofitted across China's older oxidation plants. If adopted widely, it could reduce cyclohexane demand per ton of cyclohexanone, slightly easing supply tightness in the merchant market.
