How do safety and regulatory concerns around DMF affect its industrial use and trade?
DMF carries significant regulatory and safety baggage that shapes its market. It is classified by IARC as a Group 2A probable carcinogen and listed on the EU SVHC candidate list with a 0.1% (1000 mg/kg) limit. It is also reproductive toxic (Category 1B) and flammable. In food-contact materials, a Chinese consumer test found DMF at 7,038 mg/kg in cork stoppers—far above typical leather industry limits of 200 mg/kg—highlighting contamination risks. Industrial users face hazards: DMF decomposes above 153°C releasing dimethylamine and CO, reacts violently with strong acids or bases, and NaH/DMF mixtures can ignite at 40°C. These factors push some buyers toward alternatives like DMAc or NMP, capping demand growth in sensitive applications like electronics and pharmaceuticals.
