How are regulations reshaping demand across the Alcohols & Ethers category in China?
Regulation is the single biggest force splitting this category. Ethylene glycol ethers such as BCS, EM, EE and EPh are high-VOC, strong-odour and increasingly restricted or banned in China and the EU, with indoor coatings a no-go zone. Demand is migrating to propylene glycol ethers like PM, PNB, DPM and DPnB, which are low-VOC, mild in odour and compliant with GB, REACH and LEED. Glycol ether esters such as PMA and DPMA add hydrolytic stability for wood and industrial coatings, while alcohol ester-12 sits at the top of the environmental ladder. Buyers should expect a widening price gap between legacy and compliant grades.

The compliance split also affects supply planning. Producers still weighted toward ethylene glycol ethers face shrinking domestic outlets and rising inventory risk, while propylene glycol ether capacity is being absorbed quickly by waterborne architectural and industrial coatings. Watch feedstock propylene oxide economics, since integrated producers can defend margins better than merchants.
