Published on 2026-09-17

Chempricehub News Report – September 17

Ethylene-based Vinyl Acetate (VAM):
In Jiangsu Province, the weekly average price of glacial acetic acid was RMB 4,055/ton. The Northeast Asian ethylene spot price averaged USD 1,150/ton for the week. Based on Chempricehub’s cost estimation model, the theoretical production cost for ethylene-based VAM stood at RMB 7,475.41/ton. Meanwhile, the weekly average ex-factory price for Shanghai Petrochemical’s ethylene-based VAM in East China was RMB 7,720/ton, resulting in a theoretical weekly gross margin of RMB 244.6/ton.

Calcium Carbide-based Vinyl Acetate (VAM):
In North China, the weekly average price of glacial acetic acid was RMB 3,962/ton. In Northwest China, calcium carbide averaged RMB 2,620/ton for the week. According to Chempricehub’s cost calculation, the theoretical production cost for calcium carbide-based VAM was RMB 6,598.20/ton. Current market prices for Great Wall Energy & Chemical’s VAM in Jiangsu were reported at RMB 6,950/ton, yielding a theoretical weekly gross margin of RMB 1,071.8/ton.

Note: A subsequent data point indicates that with glacial acetic acid in North China averaging RMB 2,559/ton and calcium carbide in Northwest China at RMB 2,550/ton, the theoretical cost for calcium carbide-based VAM dropped to RMB 5,443.30/ton. With Great Wall Energy & Chemical’s Jiangsu supply priced at RMB 5,700/ton, the theoretical weekly gross margin was RMB 156.70/ton.

Ethylene-based VAM margins at RMB 244/ton are dangerously thin, signaling tight capacity utilization pressure. While calcium carbide routes show better profitability, the volatility in acetic acid feedstock costs creates..
