ChemPriceHub Alert: Approval of Xinjiang Coal-Based Activated Carbon Project Boosts Coal Demand
Published on 2026-02-07

On February 4, the Xinjiang Zhundong Economic and Technological Development Zone approved the construction of a new project by Xinjiang Wanlian New Materials for an annual production of 100,000 tons of coal-based activated carbon. The total investment is 435 million yuan, with an environmental protection investment of 3.2 million yuan. The project utilizes raw coal as feedstock and is equipped with 36 integrated carbon activation furnaces and a 100MW waste heat power generation system. It also includes the simultaneous construction of environmental protection facilities such as desulfurization, denitrification, dust removal, wastewater treatment, and solid waste storage.

PriceSeek’s analysis of coal, with a long-short score of 1:
This project produces 100,000 tons of coal-based activated carbon annually using raw coal as feedstock, which is expected to increase coal demand by approximately 150,000 to 200,000 tons (based on typical production ratios). This will boost supply and demand in the coal spot market, driving up prices, which is generally favorable. The analysis indicates that while the additional demand is not large-scale, combined with regional investment growth, it will support coal spot prices and may stimulate procurement activity in the short term.
