In July 2026, China's methanol imports actually discharged from foreign vessels totaled 971,000 metric tons (counted upon berthing, excluding Russian overland imports), an increase of 505,200 metric tons, or 108.46%, compared with the previous month's customs import volume of 465,800 metric tons.

In July 2026, China's methanol exports are estimated at around 97,000 metric tons, a decrease of 48,700 metric tons, or 33.42%, from the previous month's customs export volume of 145,700 metric tons.

  1. Influencing Factors

Imports: The earlier ceasefire in US-Iran peace talks prompted a large volume of floating storage to sail out of the Strait, leading to a sharp rebound in imports in July.

Exports: As the US-Iran peace talks gradually took shape, buying interest dropped sharply, causing export orders to fall significantly.

  1. Trend Forecast

In July, methanol import cargo discharges are estimated at 971,000 metric tons, with 551,200 metric tons unloaded from the main Middle East source region and 419,800 metric tons from non-Iranian cargoes. In July, after fighting reignited between the US and Iran and the Strait was blocked again, vessel loadings stalled once more. According to Chempricehub data, the main Middle East source region is estimated to have dispatched around 378,000 metric tons in July. Total imports in August are expected to fall again to around 718,200 metric tons, of which the main Middle East supply is estimated at 369,000 metric tons and non-Iranian supply at around 349,200 metric tons. (Due to multiple port-related factors, cargo arrival times may be subject to change; actual port receipts shall be based on final terminal arrivals.)

The July import spike from Middle East supply looks like a one-off, but the August drop on renewed conflict will pressure margins and downstream buying. Expect volatility.
