Total Investment of $2.5 Billion: Construction Timeline Finalized for Chile's Large-Scale Green Ammonia Project

Published on 2026-01-05

Recently, the large-scale green ammonia development project "Project Volta" in the Mejillones region of northern Chile has officially obtained environmental approval, marking the completion of the approval process for this key clean energy project and its entry into the implementation phase. It is reported that "Project Volta" is led by the Chilean domestic company Mejillones Ammonia Energy, with a total investment of up to $2.5 billion. The project adopts a phased construction model, with each phase planned to produce 310,000 tons of green ammonia annually. Upon full completion, it will achieve a scaled production capacity of 620,000 tons per year. According to the plan, the project is expected to commence construction in 2027 and officially transition to commercial operation in 2029.

In terms of green and low-carbon design, the project features notable highlights. On one hand, it will be equipped with a 600-megawatt solar power station and an energy storage system, relying entirely on clean energy for production. On the other hand, all production water will be sourced from wastewater currently discharged into the sea by the city of Mejillones, achieving water resource recycling. According to estimates, once fully operational, the project will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by over 1 million tons annually.

It is worth noting that the project is located in the Mejillones region, which boasts excellent solar energy resources and is close to Chile's major mining areas, enabling effective alignment with domestic green ammonia market demand. As Chile's first industrial-scale green ammonia project to complete all approval procedures, the implementation of "Project Volta" will inject new momentum into the country's clean energy industry development.
